The Most Important Decision Happens Before the Design Begins

When most people think about jewelry design, they imagine sketches, metalwork, and the final polish of a finished piece. At Mistissi, the most critical moment in our entire process happens much earlier — before a single design decision is made. It happens when we select the pearls themselves.

Hand-selecting pearls is not a romantic affectation or a marketing phrase. It is the foundation of everything we make. And it is, without question, the most time-consuming part of what we do.

Why Pearls Cannot Be Ordered Like Components

Most jewelry materials can be specified and ordered with precision. A goldsmith can request a particular gauge of wire, a specific alloy, an exact carat weight of a faceted stone. The material arrives consistent, predictable, and ready to work with.

Pearls do not work this way. They are organic gems, formed by living creatures over months and years, and no two are identical. Even within a single harvest from a single farm, pearls vary enormously in lustre, surface quality, shape, colour, and overtone. A strand of pearls that appears uniform to the casual eye may contain dozens of subtle variations that a trained eye can immediately detect.

This means that sourcing pearls for fine jewelry is not a transaction — it is a process of discovery, evaluation, and patient selection.

What We Look for When We Select Pearls

When we evaluate pearls for Mistissi pieces, we are assessing multiple qualities simultaneously:

• Lustre: The depth and intensity of the pearl's glow. True lustre is not a surface shine — it is a light that seems to come from within the pearl, created by the layering of translucent nacre. A pearl with exceptional lustre has an almost mirror-like quality; you can see reflections in its surface. This is the single most important quality indicator in a pearl.
• Surface quality: Pearls naturally develop surface characteristics during their formation — small ridges, spots, or variations in texture. We look for pearls with clean, smooth surfaces, accepting only minor natural characteristics that do not affect the overall beauty of the piece.
• Shape: For our classic pieces, we seek pearls with consistent, well-defined shapes — whether that is a true round, a clean baroque form, or a specific keshi shape. For our more artistic designs, we look for baroque and keshi pearls whose irregular forms have genuine sculptural interest.
• Colour and overtone: Pearl colour is layered — there is the body colour (white, cream, pink, lavender) and the overtone, a secondary colour that plays across the surface (rose, silver, green, gold). We select pearls whose colour and overtone work harmoniously together and complement the gold settings we use.
• Nacre thickness: Nacre is the substance that makes a pearl beautiful and durable. Thin nacre produces a dull, chalky appearance and wears poorly over time. We only work with pearls that have substantial nacre depth — a quality that cannot be seen but can be assessed by an experienced eye.

Why It Takes Time

Selecting pearls for a single piece of Mistissi jewelry can take far longer than the metalwork itself. Here is why:

For a matched pearl necklace or bracelet, every pearl in the piece must be evaluated not only on its individual merits but on how it relates to every other pearl in the strand. Lustre must be consistent. Colour must be harmonious. Size must graduate or match precisely, depending on the design. A strand of thirty pearls might require evaluating hundreds of candidates to find thirty that belong together.

For our baroque and keshi pieces, the selection process is different but equally demanding. We are looking for pearls whose irregular forms have genuine artistic quality — shapes that are interesting rather than merely irregular, surfaces that catch light beautifully, proportions that will translate into a wearable, balanced piece of jewelry.

We do not rush this process. A piece that is not right at the pearl selection stage cannot be made right at any later stage. The pearl is the soul of the jewelry — everything else serves it.
